How Orthotics Work

Orthotics are inserts placed in shoes that help the feet move and function correctly. When the feet are not properly aligned, it can create uneven pressure and strain on the muscles, joints, and tendons. Common causes include flat feet, high arches, poor alignment, or repeated stress from walking, running, or standing for long periods of time. Symptoms include foot pain, heel pain, swelling, tired legs, and even discomfort in the knees or lower back. Orthotics can help by supporting the arch, guiding the foot into better alignment, and distributing pressure more evenly across the foot. This type of treatment can reduce strain on the body, improve balance, and help the feet, ankles, and legs work together more efficiently during movement. If you feel that you could benefit from orthotics, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an initial evaluation.

Custom orthotics can be an important solution for reducing foot pain by targeting its structural causes rather than just the symptoms. When the feet are misaligned, excess strain develops in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, often resulting in discomfort in the arches, balls of the feet, or toes. Orthotics are designed to match each foot’s natural shape, supporting proper alignment and evenly distributing pressure to ease pain and improve movement.

Foot pain is commonly caused by overuse, wearing improper footwear, or biomechanical issues that place added stress on sensitive areas. By stabilizing the foot and restoring natural motion, custom orthotics help reduce strain, calm inflammation, and promote healing. Many patients experience lasting relief and greater comfort while walking, standing, or exercising.

Created from a detailed assessment using advanced imaging or casting, each pair of orthotics is tailored to your individual needs. If you are experiencing ongoing foot pain, it is suggested that you contact our office for an evaluation and treatment.

Choosing Comfortable Shoes for Children and Supporting Healthy Feet

Selecting the right shoes for children is important for comfort and healthy foot development. In recent studies, children may believe that comfort equates to softness, which may depend on the  age of the child. A well-fitting shoe should provide gentle support, allow natural motion, and avoid pressure on growing feet. Shoes that are too tight or poorly structured can lead to discomfort and conditions like blisters or foot fatigue. Children may not always express discomfort, so observing how they walk and play is essential. A podiatrist can assess foot growth, recommend proper footwear, and address any concerns early. If you have concerns about your child's feet and what shoes they should be wearing, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can provide necessary treatment and offer you informational guidance and helpful tips.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.
